Power Replenishment Method for Low-Voltage Silicone LED Neon Flex Strips

1. What is Power Replenishment & Its Purpose

When power is supplied from only one end for a long neon strip, voltage drop occurs due to resistance of the internal PCB circuit. The front section of the strip will be bright while the tail section turns dim obviously; RGB strips will also have color shift and uneven brightness across the whole light body.
Power replenishment means adding multiple parallel power supply points along the neon strip to make up for voltage loss caused by line resistance, ensuring consistent brightness of the entire strip.

Mandatory Power Replenishment Length Standard

  • DC12V silicone neon: Power replenishment is required if the total length of a single strip exceeds 5 meters
  • DC24V silicone neon: Power replenishment is required if the total length of a single strip exceeds 10 meters

2. Three Main Construction Solutions for Power Replenishment

Solution 1: Dual-End Power Supply (Simplest, for 5–10m strips)

Suitable for straight lines, circular surrounding shapes and strips within the length threshold
  1. Cut off power completely during operation to avoid short circuit and electric shock;
  2. Lead two groups of positive and negative wires from the same DC power supply;
  3. Connect one group to the terminal at the start end of the strip, and route the other group along the strip to connect to the terminal at the tail end;
  4. Strictly match positive wire with positive pole and negative wire with negative pole; reverse wiring is prohibited;
  5. For outdoor use, fill waterproof silicone glue into both end caps after wiring for sealing.
Advantages: Easy construction; current converges from two ends to the middle with excellent voltage balance effect.

Solution 2: Mid-Segment Power Replenishment (For strips over 10 meters long)

  1. Locate the midpoint of the whole strip and align it with the printed cutting marks on the internal PCB;
  2. Cut a small opening on the silicone tube to expose the positive and negative soldering pads of the PCB;
  3. Solder thick 16–18AWG copper wires to the pads (thick wires reduce line resistance);
  4. Route the power replenishment wires back to the original power supply and connect them in parallel with the main incoming wires;
  5. Fill the cut gap of silicone with waterproof silicone glue to restore IP67 waterproof rating.
Engineering Standard: Add one power replenishment point every 5 meters for 12V strips; add one every 10 meters for ultra-long 24V strips.

Solution 3: Independent Power Supply by Segments (Preferred for engineering projects over 20 meters)

Ideal for villa exterior wall lighting and ultra-long storefront signs
  1. Split the overall strip into multiple independent sections: Max 5 meters per section for 12V, max 10 meters per section for 24V;
  2. Equip a matched DC power adapter separately for each section;
  3. Connect all power supplies to AC mains 220V respectively. Daisy-chaining multiple long strips to share one power supply is forbidden.
Advantages: Completely eliminate voltage drop; RGB full-color strips maintain uniform color without deviation.

3. Standard Operating Procedures for On-Site Power Replenishment

  1. Pre-inspection: Unroll the neon strip and power it on to confirm the dim tail position before fixing installation;
  2. Wire Selection: Adopt thick 16–18AWG stranded copper wires for replenishment leads to reduce line loss;
  3. Soldering Specification: Only solder at the printed cutting marks on PCB; do not damage LED chips;
  4. Insulation & Waterproof Treatment: Cover soldering joints with heat shrink tubes for insulation, then fill all silicone cuts and gaps of end caps with electronic waterproof silicone glue. Allow 4–12 hours for full curing;
  5. Voltage Verification: After power-on, measure voltage at the start, midpoint and tail with a multimeter. The voltage difference shall not exceed 10% of the rated voltage.

4. Critical Construction Prohibitions

  1. All replenishment wires must be connected in parallel to the same power supply. Do not use multiple different power supplies for one continuous strip, otherwise RGB color disorder will occur;
  2. Both positive and negative wires must be connected at each replenishment point; connecting only the positive wire cannot solve voltage drop;
  3. For split-type silicone neon: Pull out the internal PCB light strip first to solder replenishment wires, then push the PCB back into the hollow tube and seal the cut;
  4. Outdoor engineering must combine power replenishment, aluminum channel protection and full glue sealing to maintain waterproof rating;
  5. Thin 22–24AWG wires are forbidden for replenishment leads, as thin wires will generate new voltage loss.
