How to Make Silicone LED Neon Flex Strips Waterproof

1. Integrated Extrusion Silicone Body (Factory Original Waterproof Structure)

This is the fundamental waterproof design of silicone neon lights.

The PCB light strip is wrapped with solid silicone through one-time high-temperature extrusion molding. There is no gap between the silicone shell and internal light board, which blocks rainwater, mist and moisture fundamentally, reaching IP65 / IP67 standard directly out of factory.
  • Advantage: Stable long-term waterproof performance, no water seepage inside the lamp body itself.
  • Reminder: This only solves the waterproof of the main light strip; the cut ends and wiring joints still need secondary sealing.

2. Waterproof Sealing for Cutting End Caps (Core Step for On-site Construction)

All cutting positions destroy the integrated silicone layer, so end cap sealing is mandatory:
  1. Select matching silicone waterproof end caps according to the neon tube size.
  2. Fill the inner cavity of the end cap with transparent waterproof silicone glue.
  3. Insert the wire through the end cap, connect positive and negative poles to the PCB board.
  4. Snap the end cap tightly onto the neon tube port, and fill all gaps between tube wall and end cap with extra glue.
  5. Let the silicone glue cure completely (usually 4–12 hours) before powering on.

3. Waterproof Treatment of Wiring Connection Joints

Splices between two sections of neon strips or connections between strip and power supply are high-risk leakage points:

Method A: Silicone Glue Full Sealing

Wrap the connected copper terminals with insulating tape first, then coat thick waterproof silicone glue all over the joint, and wrap it tightly with heat shrink tube after the glue dries.

Method B: Waterproof Wire Connector

Use dedicated IP67 male-female waterproof connectors. Lock the rubber rings at both ends tightly to prevent water from creeping along the wire into the light tube.

4. Auxiliary Waterproof Protection with Aluminum Mounting Channel

For outdoor long-term projects, install split aluminum groove as secondary protection:
  1. Fix the silicone neon tube inside the aluminum channel.
  2. Cover the PC light-diffusing cover to block direct rain splash, ultraviolet rays and dust.
  3. Drill tiny drainage holes at the bottom of the aluminum channel to drain accumulated dew and rainwater automatically.

5. Special Waterproof Measures for Extreme Outdoor Environments

  • Seaside salt fog environment: Use anti-corrosion silicone glue and stainless steel fixing clips, avoid metal rust penetration.
  • Long-term immersion (fish tank, waterscape): Upgrade to IP68 deep-water neon tube, use double-layer sealed end caps and fully encapsulated power supply.
  • Low temperature rainy and snowy areas: Choose low-temperature resistant silicone sealant to prevent glue cracking from cold.

6. Waterproof Forbidden Operations (Will Destroy Waterproof Performance)

  1. Do not cut the neon strip randomly outside the marked cutting points, which will create unclosable cracks.
  2. Do not use cheap ordinary glass glue instead of special electronic waterproof silicone glue (it will turn yellow and crack within months).
  3. Do not expose power adapters directly outdoors; place them in sealed waterproof junction boxes.
  4. Do not fold the neon tube sharply to crack the silicone outer layer.
